Feeling lonely? Make friends over 40

The funny thing is when you start feeling happy alone, that's when everyone decides to be with you"- Jim Carey

Making friends at any age can be challenging, but it can be especially difficult as we get older and our lives become more established. As for me, I was in the Air Force for 10 years which required moves every 3 years and then I married an Army Officer which meant we had to move every 2 years. It can be very challenging to make friends when you know that you have to start packing your bags a year after you arrive. I later found through conversation with peers that making friends isn't just a challenge for service members it's a challenge that many of us experience. What's the culprit you ask? Fear of rejection!

Now that we're both civilians we've been able to lay roots here in Huntsville, Alabama and we're well on our way to building a strong sense of community. I attend weekly bible study with a good friends, I joined a workout group at my local gym and having the opportunity to be social with neighborhood Moms is fun too. I believe it's also important to know what kind of friend your looking for. As Sarah Jakes Robert says we should value protection over connection. Which simply means that our friends should truly care about our wellbeing and be a guardian over our heart.

Wherever you are in life, it's important to remember that it's never too late to make new friends! Here are a few tips that might help you make connections:

  1. Find common ground: Look for opportunities to connect with people who share your interests, whether that's through a hobby or a class you're taking. Joining a club or group can be a great way to meet like-minded people.

  2. Volunteer: Volunteering can be a great way to meet people while doing something meaningful. You'll have the opportunity to work with others towards a common goal, and you might make some new friends in the process.

  3. Take a class: Taking a class, whether it's through a community college or an adult education program, is a great way to meet people who are interested in learning something new.

  4. Attend social events: Attend social events such as parties, gatherings or even online meeting if situation permit. It's an easy way to meet new people and have a good time.

  5. Be open to new experiences: Sometimes the best way to make new friends is to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. Take a chance and you never know who you might meet.

  6. Online communities: There are many online communities to join where you can make friends with people who share your interests, location, and age.

  7. Be you: Sometimes we forget that being the happiest version of yourself is the best way to naturally attract people who match your energy.

Remember, it takes time to build friendships. Be patient, don't be afraid to put yourself out there, and most importantly, be yourself. Building friendships is an ongoing process, but with some effort and patience, you can make new connections and friendships at any age.

Lastly, don't be too hard on yourself if it takes longer than you would like to make friends. It takes time and effort, but it's worth it.
